So I’ve been waiting to watch this drama after I saw HallyuBack’s video because let’s be honest, it’s Autumn, it’s cold and I could use some giggles. I am hooked. The first episode was hilarious but I’m not going to keep my hopes too high. i’ve noticed with some romcom drama’s they tend to lose that comedic element and get way too serious/depressing so I begin to lose interest. Anyway onto my first impressions…
The episode revolves around Kim Hye Jin (Hwang Jung Eun) and Min Ha Ri (Koh Joon He). Both girls are best friends and it’s pretty evident how tight they are within the first few minutes. Despite living together their lifestyles differ a lot. Whilst Hye Jin hustles because of her lack of needs Ha Ri bathes in luxury. Not gonna lie the episode just blinds you with comparisons between them- sort of like ok we get it. Their friendship is the ideal we all try to build as they look out for each other, celebrate achievements, bitch, gossip and partayy. Although how long that will last, time will tell. I try not to judge, but when they revealed Hye Jin’s face even I was a little like – woah. To be honest that was only my initial reaction, after a while you can see that underneath she has a pretty face. It’s just her get up that throws you off really which is something people need to realise. Swag up and watch them heads turn. Appearance seems to be the core theme of the drama. Literally throughout the whole drama it’s either be pretty or be stomped on. I wonder if a makeover scene will come up soon? It may contradict the story a little but we will have to see.
Hye Jin and Ha Ri are actually similar in their positive outlook on life the difference being is that one is more girlier than the other. Fabulous vs. Casual. At the interview scene I was initially shocked. It seems like it must be a big thing not to go to a University in Seoul since she gets slated for not doing so. However i could say the same for the UK too although maybe the expectations are a little less rigid. Of course as soon as she walks out of the building trash has to fly in her face. It won’t be Kdrama without it’s exaggerations.
Hye Jin is definitely more of a dreamer than Ha Ri who focuses on reality. Hye Jin asks her whether she has ever felt true love with her many man dem but she point-blank tells her that such a thing doesn’t even exist. Despite their differences in opinions they still have each others backs. #SoulSisterz
Enter Sung Joon our male lead (Park Seo Joon) who happens to send Hye Jin an email asking to meet up. We discover that this guy was a clapped fat kid and he became best friends with Hye Jin when Ha Ri left for overseas. Hey Jin also admits that he was her first love. Ha Ri realising her feels decides to help her out a little by applying some of her lipstick onto Hye Jin. #BlessHaRisCommonSense
After this we see the jigsaw puzzle picture that Sung Joon was doing in the beginning reappear so it’s blatant that the picture is also going to be something special in this series. Shin Hyuk (Choi Si Won) our second lead also appears at the same time and we get a much different feel from him. Shin Hyuk seems like the happy-go-lucky, relaxed guy in comparison to Sung Joon’s clean and mature demeanour. The way the both entered the episode literally looked like the exact scene from the final Fast and Furious movie minus the sentiment. Hye Jin mistakes a chubby dude for Sung Joon as she forgets the fact that he may not actually look the same from before.
She soon realises Sung Joon makes exactly the same mistake as her. This is when we find the back story that SHE WAS PRETTY (get it?) when she was younger however during puberty she seemed to have done a u-turn. I see why he must have mistaken the girl behind because the actress who played mini Hye Jin is beautiful. No joke.
Immediately she runs legs it to Ha Ri. She explains that she can’t meet him given the way she looks as it will be too embarrassing as well as shattering Sung Joon’s memories of her. I just loved how Ha Ri kept demanding her to just go meet him instead of hiding in the shadows. Everyone needs a friend like Ha Ri! She seems to slowly become my favourite character.
However this won’t be Kdrama without it’s subtle twists. Hye Jin complains how she wishes she could borrow Ha Ri’s body just to meet him and then decides to do just that. Soon as she mentioned it I was like- ‘not this BS again’. When has these sort of things ever gone right? Oh My Ghost itself reminded me. The story behind the picture’s significance is revealed in a flashback. A girl is hidden in the corner and Hye Jin says how she’s like a hidden picture which basically illustrates the current scene she finds herself in. The picture also acts as a reminder to the older Sung Joon that having even one friend makes life less lonely.
The failed teamwork between Ha Ri and Hye Jin got me cracking up so hard. Ha Ri just looks awkward and confused throughout the whole charade. It was sort of hard to be touched by Sung Joon’s serious feelings. It turns out in the past they became closer especially after he had a panic attack, I assume from thinking of his mother’s death, and Hye Jin provided him shelter as well as comfort. The missing jigsaw piece from earlier was given to her when he left Korea as a way of securing their connection to each other.
The desperate, disheartened face Sung Joon makes when she tells him she’s off to study abroad- I just want to hug him!
Hye Jin in return for Ha Ri doing her this favor takes off her makeup for her since she passes out after their outing. That jerk by Ha Ri tho… Anyway good news comes to the girls once Hye Jin finds out that she was picked out at the interview for candidacy which can only mean PARTAAYYY!
Unfortunately her first day doesn’t go as planned. Her jeans rip twice, and she trips over Shin Hyuk. The girl actually thinks she broke her tooth when she facepalmed the floor and literally looks like a weirdo when trying to talk as if she lost her tooth. It turns out it was a piece of gum that Shin Hyuk dropped earlier. Tough times Hye Jin. Also she seems to have acquired a new nickname from Shin Hyuk- “Michael Jackson” because of her shoes.
And her whole team pars her on the first day as well as giving her all the laborious jobs. She being thick-skinned does all her tasks in record time and gets tasked with dropping off some items at the Most Editing Team. This is where everything begins because she gets mistaken for the revising placement. I would love to work in this sort Team but I would stick out like a squirrel among tigers- just like Hye Jin. All outfits were on point and colourful in contrast to the drab colours of her other office. She gets confused because they keep piling work on her constantly but she still as usual finishes them in record time. Coincidentally when the Team find that she actually wasn’t the translator they decide to transfer her into their department because of her efficiency. Confused she settles in but gets much better treatment than her previous department who were absolute shits. Of course the plot twist had to come in the end. Seo Joon turns out to be the new Editor for the magazine. Her face drops. Mine was laughing.
Early in the episode during Ha Ri’s birthday, Ha Ri accidentally falls into the swimming pool. Literally 5 guys from different angles dive in to save her, I was like this is just crazy. Hye Jin also jumps in to save her friend but it’s the quote she says during her failed rescue that I liked. I feel like a lot of girls feel like this but those who do, don’t realise it’s because their too focused on how well another is doing. You have your own story, grab a marker and write because no one else ain’t going to give a shit.
